How Exploration Drilling Has Revolutionized Mining

In an effort to find new and reusable natural resources, the mining industry has aimed to find different ways to conduct exploration drilling. There are many ways that exploration drilling is performed. The first thing a drilling company must do is to find an area in the world where minerals or oil are plentiful or potentially available. Once a target site has been decided on, the drilling can begin. Unfortunately, not every drill site will produce positive results, which is why it’s calling exploration drilling. The process can take time and cost money.

Fortunately, technology has made exploration drilling services easier to conduct and it provides drilling companies with far more productive results. There are commonly four types of exploration drilling such as passive seismic, gravity, reflective seismic or magnetic surveying.

Each of these forms use different kinds of technology to measure the way gravity accelerates towards the bottom of a target site, or they measure the changes in the Earth’s magnetic field. Even seismic vibrations, which are in many ways similar to the technology used in sonar radars, are used to survey a site.

Different drilling companies use different methods to explore a site before drilling actually begins. A smaller company will have a limited budget which is why these levels of exploration are conducted using the latest technology, especially in remote areas of the world, before committing to a job.

The next step in exploration drilling is to create a series of test holes. This is done so that the technicians can check the resources or potential resources in the region and determine their quality. The materials that drilling companies are looking for can range from oil and gas to ore samples, diamonds, and deposits of petroleum. When the drill bit penetrates the target site, it will also collect samples which are extracted and then checked for its value. Exploration drilling will help the company decide whether or not continuing to extract these core samples will ultimately produce enough money to cover the cost of drilling and extraction while producing sufficient enough profit for the company itself to keep. When dealing with oil, a geologist will be brought in to check the oil sample and determine if the traits within the compound falls within acceptable parameters. In some cases, exploration drilling isn’t about determining whether a dig site is worthy of further mining. Sometimes, it is used as a way to explore what is under the Earth’s crust. Doing so can help geologists figure out the history of the Earth’s composition.

The core samples extracted during exploration drilling can be used to gather data from anything like mud or an icy surface. This information will be valuable because it will determine things like climate changes in the area or even an increase in chemicals which may be the result of human interference and may affect a potential dig site.

Exploration drilling saves the mining industry millions of dollars each years by identifying which dig sites are suitable for mining and which ones aren’t worthy of the labour or the cost.
